Five Tips For Taking on a New Role

Connections build over coffee are the best! I had the chance to visit with Michelle McGurk-Drake, a new Guardian ad Litem volunteer, this morning. Her advice to new volunteers could be universally applied to any new role so I share her gold nuggets here….

  1. Take Nothing Personally They don’t even really know you, so be like a duck and let that water roll right off your back.

  2. Have a Mentor or Volunteer Partner Things are so much easier when you have someone who truly understands what you’re experiencing.

  3. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help Most individuals in an organization want to help and it will take a lot longer to fix something done wrong than to just ask and get it right the first time.

  4. If at First You Don’t Succeed, Try Again We are human after-all; cut yourself some slack and get back up at it.

  5. Always Act with Kindness and Courteousness You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

As a bonus, I throw in my one piece: Take the Time to Have Coffee With a New Friend.
